Scalable load balancer

Scalable Load Balancer

  • Scalable Managed Hosting Solutions for web applications and database driven sites
  • Load Balanced to remove single points of failure
  • Flexibility - hosting solution can scale up or down when needed
  • Fully Managed by our team of UK based Linux support professionals

Software applications require a secure and agile infrastructure that can grow with the demands of the user. Whether you're running a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application, E-commerce shop or in-house CRM solution, detailed infrastructure planning is critical to avoid costly and time consuming re-engineering at a later date. ForLinux technicians have implemented many complex solutions comprising a mix of load balancers, multiple web servers, database servers and replication to provide a robust and scalable solution every time.

In the scenario above, a load balancer with integrated firewall, routes web traffic to the web server layer based on server load algorithms. Static content is provided by a web proxy server to reduce load on the other web servers. An internal gigabit switch ensures faster, more reliable, traffic flow between the internal servers. MySQL has been set up in a Master-Slave configuration with a MemCache server to deliver most frequently accessed data.

This solution is ideal for high traffic E-commerce shops, web 2.0 applications, CMS solutions and any other application that requires scalability.

The is a multifaceted security standard that includes requirements for

  • Security Management
  • Policies & Procedures
  • Network Architecture
  • Software Design

This comprehensive standard is intended to help organisations proactively protect customer account data.

If your business processes credit cards transactions or stores credit card information, you have to be PCI compliant.  The time and resources required to become PCI compliant can be daunting and if implemented incorrectly can result in a major fine.

There are 12 requirements which must be fulfilled in order to become compliant -

  • Build and Maintain a Secure Network
    • Requirement 1: Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data
    • Requirement 2: Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters
  • Protect Cardholder Data
    • Requirement 3: Protect stored cardholder data
    • Requirement 4: Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks
  • Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program
    • Requirement 5: Use and regularly update anti-virus software
    • Requirement 6: Develop and maintain secure systems and applications
  • Implement Strong Access Control Measures
    • Requirement 7: Restrict access to cardholder data by business need-to-know
    • Requirement 8: Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access
    • Requirement 9: Restrict physical access to cardholder data
  • Regularly Monitor and Test Networks
    • Requirement 10: Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data
    • Requirement 11: Regularly test security systems and processes
  • Maintain an Information Security Policy
    • Requirement 12: Maintain a policy that addresses information security

Few hosting providers cover even the most basic PCI Compliance requirements. Some, including ForLinux, cover requirement 9 and 12 as part of a managed hosting solution. However, the remaining requirements must still be met in order to process or store credit cards data.

As part of our PCI Hosting package, we can provide a solution which covers all the above requirements for an online business presence. Please see below an example configuration for PCI compliance:

ForLinux can quickly provision a fully PCI accredited solution for you, removing the burden of design, implementation, configuration and continued management of your online PCI solution.

If your business requires a PCI compliant solution or if security is causing you concern, contact our Security Advisor on or complete the Get In touch form to the right of this page.

Media server - File server

Media Server - File Server

  • Optimal performance hosting solutions to enhance the success of your online campaigns.
  • Unlimited network bandwidth with gigabit Internet connections
  • Scalable architecture with mutli-layered infrastructure
  • Fully Managed by our team of UK based Linux support professionals

Solutions for delivering web 2.0 media such as video, audio and images require an infrastructure that can deliver -

o Bandwidth
o Performance
o Availability
o Storage

Bandwidth : Media files are generally large and without the required network bandwidth, may take several minutes to reach the end user. In order to deliver the best end-user experience, large dedicated network bandwidth is required. With ForLinux you can have a dedicated gigabit network feed, to ensure your files are delivered speedily and enhance user experience.

Performance : User patience can be fickle, and if your website doesn't deliver information within a few seconds the user may well decide to try elsewhere. ForLinux will advise on the best solution for rapid and effective delivery of your website content to your end users thereby enhancing your chances of winning business over your competitors.

Availability : A broken media campaign can be far more damaging than no campaign at all. Separation of the server roles removes a single point of failure and increases performance of the solution.

Storage : Its often difficult to predict your storage requirements for next month or year. That's why ForLinux offer a range of storage options including fixed local storage, shared Storage Area Network (SAN) and dedicated Storage Area Network (dSAN), supported by technical expertise to help you decide which is best for your business.

The scenario above shows a basic set up with a hardware firewall filtering unwanted traffic, a Flash media server controlling the media streaming, a web server for the dynamic and static content, a file server to store the media files and a database for the dynamic aspects of the solution.

High availability server

High Availability Solution

  • Optimal availability Multi Data Centre hosting solutions
  • Server mirroring with block level replication
  • MySQL replication and clustering solutions
  • Fully Managed by our team of UK based Linux support professionals

Multi Data Centre Failover

From time to time Data Centres experience problems that can cause website downtime. A multi Data Centre failover solution will resolve this problem. Very simply, each website name has a unique IP address. This IP address points to your live server. If the server becomes unavailable, ForLinux failover software changes the IP address to a new IP address containing an up-to-date copy of your website. This process takes approximately five minutes to achieve.

This solution is best suited for websites and applications that do not have large databases but require 24 x 7 access to their sites.

This solution provides :

  • An active disaster recovery solution
  • Improved web site availability
  • Resilient, secure and highly available operations platform delivering IT certainty

MySQL Replication and Clustering

Replication enables data from one MySQL database server (called the master) to be replicated to one or more MySQL database servers (slaves). Your replication slaves do not need to be connected permanently to receive updates from the master, which means that updates can occur over long distance connections.  Depending on the configuration, you can replicate all databases, selected databases and even selected tables within a database.

This solution provides :

  • Scale-out solutions – spreading the load among multiple slaves to improve performance.
  • Data security – because data is replicated to the slave, and the slave can pause the replication process, it is possible to run backup services on the slave without corrupting the corresponding master data.
  • Analytics – live data can be created on the master, while the analysis of the information can take place on the slave without affecting the performance of the master.

ForLinux technicians have extensive knowledge and experience in implementing and supporting MySQL replication and clustering solutions.

Server Mirroring with Block Level Replication and High Availability

Block level replication refers to the process which allows data to be replicated between two or more servers in real time across a dedicated network connection, regardless of the application running on the server. The servers can be implemented in a high availability configuration, so that in the event of a server failure a standby can take over.

This solution is ideal for mission critical environments requiring immunity from server failure, for example high demand production environments.

This solution provides :

  • Data Security - data is replicated at block level between two or more servers, regardless of the application
  • Disaster Recovery - with high availability, a server failure does not impact your business processes
  • Automatic recovery after node, network, or disk failures

Included with all Complex multi server solutions:

  • Full server and application support
  • 100% Network uptime
  • 100Mbps Bandwidth
  • Multiple IP addresses
  • Patching & Security updates
  • Full Root access
  • Server performance report
