Server Monitoring with Pulse

Pulse monitors the life and health of your server. Pulse provides vital server information to our system administrators, so we can be pre-emptive and act before your server has a critical problem. Pulse provides:

  • Improved  availability
  • Confidence in effective monitoring of critical applications
  • Reduced business risk
  • Increased server performance

How Pulse monitoring works:

  • Your server has a problem.
  • Alert received by Pulse monitoring
  • Severity of alert assessed by ForLinux technicians
  • Technician logs in to your server
  • Investigation of the problem begins
  • Problem resolved
  • Problem unresolved – Technician calls with proposed solution within Service Level Agreement

The following ports and server metrics are included in all dedicated server hosting packages -

  • Ports : HTTPD 80
  • SMTP 25
  • MySQL 3306
  • Utilisation: CPU load
  • SWAP space
  • PING
  • Free Disk Space

For more complex solutions PULSE+ monitoring is recommended.

PULSE + Monitoring

PULSE + Monitoring goes beyond monitoring basic port availability. It routinely checks your critical web pages and services to make sure they’re working properly then quickly lets us know when they’re not, so that we can resolve problems as quickly as possible. All of our monitoring options are designed to focus on the most critical components of your site, and instantly alert ForLinux to issues before they become problems. By reviewing system performance metrics a decision can be quickly made. Historical monitoring data is also available for trend analysis and to track the impact of any changes made.
A sample of additional monitoring which can be performed:

  • CRON Failure
    • Checks that the CRON Daemon is running.
    • The Value: CRON can be critical to overnight data processing and could lead to a back log of failed orders. By knowing when CRON has failed this can be avoided.
  • Mail Send/Receive
    • Tests whether a mail user can send and receive email. If the monitor finds the server is unavailable or malfunctioning, an alert is sent. Ideal for sites for which mail is a business critical function or for backend office mail servers. Works with any POP or IMAP service
    • The Value: Alerts us when your email is not working
  • URL Content Monitoring
    • Checks a single URL for a unique text string. If an identical text string is not identified, an alert is sent to ForLinux so that we can resolve the problem as quickly as possible. This is ideal for database driven websites such as CMS or e-commerce as it can also be used to detect database problems.
    • The Value: If your website is down, not only are you losing money but your brand and reputation will be affected. This alert provides pre-emptive notification before your website becomes unreachable.

PULSE + also monitors additional ports and server metrics:

  • Ports: HTTPD 80
  • SMTP 25
  • DNS 53
  • MySQL 3306
  • HTTPS 443
  • Utilisation:
    • CPU load
    • Free Memory
    • Processes
  • Disk I/O
  • Network I/O
  • Logging: Free Disk Space, Used disk space
  • Speed: URL Monitoring
  • Environment: MySQL processes, Apache Processes
